the hewitt school The Hewitt School, a private girls' school located on Manhattan's Upper East Side, purchased a 1890's landmarked townhouse within close proximity of their main building to accommodate their increasing enrollment and expanding programs. Spacesmith was retained to prepare a master plan to determine what grades and programs were to be relocated to meet the school's long term demands. Based on the master plan, the decision was made to relocate the K-3 to the townhouse and renovate the main building for the upper grades. The New York City Landmark's Commission commended Spacesmith for its adaptive reuse of the townhouse without compromising the building's architectural integrity. The interior of the new building was demolished and entirely rebuilt to meet current code requirements. The administration, board, faculty and students were thrilled to have a new, code compliant K-3 school building, steps away from Central Park. With the relocation of the K-3 grades and their ancillary programs to the new McKelvey School , Spacesmith was subsequently able to complete a welcomed expansion to the library in the main building as well as make room for increased classroom space and other programs for the upper grades.
